SIMMATH - Supporting Model Elicitin Activities Seward Inc

MEA Informational Website

Phase I of Building Model Eliciting Activities (MEAs) in the Middle Grades is supported by the Institute of Education Sciences, U.S. Department of Education, through Grant
#ED-08-PO-0643 to Seward Inc. The opinions expressed do not necessarily represent the views of the U.S. Department of Education. The project officer for this project is Ram Singh.

In Phase I of Building Model Eliciting Activities (MEAs) in the Middle Grades , Seward will develop and field test media-rich, team driven, age-appropriate, blended (computer-based and printed) mathematics instruction for middle school students. This program will supplement any existing mathematics curriculum.

The MEA will be demonstrated within two learning environments: a 3D simulated stadium and classroom. The stadium simulation immerses students in an environment where they can judge the outcome of a paper airplane contest, and the classroom simulation will allow students to participate in the paper airplane contest.

The Stadium

The stadium is an indoor arena where the paper airplane competitions take place. The clock starts when a pilot throws a plane and stops when the plane lands. The floor of the stadium will have length markers painted on it to measure distance traveled. There is a scoreboard that displays distance from start, time in flight, distance to target, and angle from target. Learn more about Elements of the Stadium

The Classroom

The classroom is a multiplayer environment. It should accommodate up to 3 students. In the classroom, students will be able to manipulate certain aspects of flying paper airplanes to best determine a judging criterion for a pre-determined set of awards.
